In my old home town Ft Lauderdale for an honor tonight (more on that later). This morning standing on the precise beach where, at age 9, looked out at this very horizon and first imagined swimming all the way from Cuba to FL. Please don’t think me a braggart for saying so but I still feel what grit it took to stand here and be bold enough to think I could swim non-stop for these 110 miles. Several of you asked if people recognized me and Bonnie while we were in Italy. Actually, quite a few. The funniest was on our flight back from Rome. My book fell from my lap. I leaned down very close next to the woman in front of me, so as not to startle her, to ask her to retrieve my book. Our faces were just a couple of inches apart. She was in fact startled and whispered, incredulously, “Are you Diana NYAD?” We both had a good laugh. But there was a hero I recognized while traveling and was thrilled to meet him. Noah Galloway lost both his left arm and leg in Iraq and has turned to extreme fitness and inspiring. His mantra: “No Excuses”. #noahgalloway #diananyad #nyad
Last night Annette Bening was honored with the Distinguished Artisan Award by the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild. Annette unfortunately has Covid at the moment so I accepted on her behalf. I had some gratitude notes from her, asking me to tell the rousing crowd how meaningful their work is, actors spending much of their shooting days with them. Annette specifically asked me to give a special shoutout to @juliehewettmakeup_ Julie Hewett was not only on the NYAD team, creating even intricate prosthetics for underwater scenes, but Annette and Julie have worked together over 34 years. We movie fans perhaps don’t appreciate the artistry that goes into enhancing a character on screen by the hair and make-up professionals. So, to fill you in on the Sat night award, it was called A Hero for our Time, given by the Stonewall Museum in Ft Lauderdale. Stonewall, named after the historic first uprising for gay rights in NYC 1969, is today embroiled in a battle against horrific new anti-gay policies in FL. Don’t Say Gay has literally been made law, meaning the word GAY cannot be uttered in kindergarten through 3rd grade throughout the state. Outrageous to deny children knowing about the real world. Brave politicians, such as Mayor Dean Trantalis @mayordeanftl here to my left, could simply abandon the state but they refuse to give up the fight. I haven’t lived in FL since high school and have been in both NYC and Los Angeles all these years, but I trained off Lauderdale, Miami, and certainly Key West over many years, and my mom continued to live in Lauderdale until she came into Alzheimer’s, when my sister and I moved her to be with us in California. But Florida will always be my home and I am alarmed by this current hateful, bigoted regime there. Am doing a slew of interviews these days. But, seriously, the most intelligent, engaging, prepared interviews of late came yesterday by these two ninth graders from Immaculate Heart High School in Los Angeles. If our future rests in the hearts and minds of young people such as Madison Dang and Annabel Cury, we have reason for high hopes.
