Meet Linda Cavazos of Henderson, Nevada: a gun safety activist, mental health professional, former public school teacher, and this week’s #WomanCrushWednesday.
After Linda’s brother Louie died by gun suicide in 1980, Linda struggled with the stigma around suicide within her community, her family, and her workplace. She decided to go back to school, earning a degree in Educational Psychology and Counseling. She was introduced to @everytown and @momsdemand by a friend and eventually found a beautiful community of people that understood her, saw her, and heard her.
Linda is a former volunteer leader with @momsdemand and former @everytown Survivor Fellow and continues to advocate for gun safety by sharing her story publicly to raise awareness and encourage others to take action on gun violence prevention. She took her advocacy to the next level by running for office, and she’s now an elected Gun Sense Candidate as a Clark County School District Trustee! In her role as Trustee, she spearheaded the effort to notify district families about securely storing their guns because she knows how critical this is to reducing firearm suicides—a big win in the 5th largest school district in the entire country!

This #WomanCrushWednesday, I want to highlight the dedication of Angela @FerrellZabala, who last week celebrated her one year anniversary as the executive director of Moms Demand Action. Fittingly named after the iconic Angela Davis, Angela is a longtime activist, who has always fought to leave our world better than she found it.
At the helm of @momsdemand, Angela has taken the gun violence prevention movement to new heights, emphasizing inclusivity and diversity every step of the way. Angela crisscrosses the country, visiting red states and blue states alike, to meet with survivors, students, and advocates. She always emphasizes the importance of intersectionality, and aims to center the people most impacted by this crisis with solutions that reflect the depth of what’s needed to create a safer country.
As a mother of four herself, she knows exactly what’s at stake. Whether it’s rallying at the Supreme Court, partnering with community organizations on the ground, or showing up at state houses across America, Angela is dedicated to building our movement with a fiery hope that is contagious to anyone who meets her.

Meet Jamie Oberheu (@oberheuj) of Waterloo, Iowa: a second-grade teacher, @momsdemand local lead, and this week’s #WomanCrushWednesday.
Jamie, with 15 years of teaching experience and a fervent commitment to gun safety, found her advocacy propelled into greater significance when, last Friday, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds discreetly signed a dangerous bill into law. This legislation grants all school employees the ability to carry firearms within schools with qualified immunity, despite significant opposition from the people of Iowa. This decision, which follows a mass shooting at Perry High School, has stirred Jamie to speak out: “As a result of this tragedy, our governor and state legislators are passing a bill that arms teachers and school personnel. This is absurd: allowing more guns will not remove guns from schools. It makes it even more dangerous.”
The decision made in Iowa is deeply upsetting —schools ought to foster an environment of education and growth, not one tainted by fear and violence. Jamie’s choice to join Moms Demand Action reflects her refusal to accept the status quo of school shootings and reckless policies. Instead, she took action by becoming a local chapter lead, educating her community through @besmartforkids, and participating in and completing the Demand a Seat program to become a Gun Sense Candidate.
Jamie’s dedication, along with that of many others in Iowa, who are speaking out against the shortcomings of their elected officials, is truly inspiring. Let’s stand with them by texting IOWA to 644-33, demonstrating that we refuse to accept this decision and are committed to voting for school safety in November.

When it comes to organizing, Alex believes in a “boots on the ground” approach—constantly engaging with and supporting the work of community partners who are on the front lines of solving America’s gun violence crisis. Working with partners, she has been instrumental in the installation of several murals across the state to commemorate victims of gun violence and played a major role in engaging a statewide coalition of partners in California to pass A.B. 28: the Gun Violence Prevention and School Safety Act. Passed in 2023, this historic, first-in-the-nation bill will annually fund gun violence prevention programs by taxing firearms and ammunition, providing vital resources to life-saving programs.

This week’s #WomenCrushWednesday coincides with National Gun Violence Survivors Week, an annual week where people in America take stock of the human toll of America’s gun violence crisis, and honor survivors with action. So today we shine a light on Gabriella Rodriguez.
Gabriella Rodriguez was living in Central Florida, working as a sexual health and wellness educator and case manager within the LGBTQ community, when a gunman attacked the LGBTQ nightclub Pulse, killing 49 people and wounding dozens more.
Following the shooting, Gabriella said language barriers and cultural differences made it difficult for the victims’ families to access support and resources in the aftermath of the shooting. In response, several organizations emerged, including @QLatinx, which provides safe spaces for LGBTQ and Latinx individuals to talk about the issues affecting them.
“Sometimes I wonder why anyone would listen to me and I wonder if I’m really making a difference,” Gabriella continued. “But then I sit with other survivors and listen to their stories, I share space and stand alongside them, and I am reinvigorated and know we can make a difference.”
This #GVSurvivorsWeek, honor Gabriella and all who work to make their communities safer by sharing her story.
