Jennifer Ashton Instagram - Disappointing news: I’ve halted circulation and distribution on the 4th issue of my magazine, which was due to hit stands today after I recently learned that images of me had been excessively altered without my knowledge and explicit permission.  I’m firmly against photoshopping images because it creates unrealistic and unattainable standards, especially when it comes to health, beauty and wellness. As a doctor, I believe in celebrating real people, real results and the beauty of who we actually are-no extreme edits required.  That’s what WE are about, and that’s why I’ve always been real with you, even when it’s not “pretty.” Whether it’s posting a video without any makeup, or telling you about my eyelash extensions, “faux-pony” or wigs, I’ve always been honest, transparent, and authentic  with you, because that’s what you deserve. Jennifer Ashton Instagram - Can we PLEASE stop attacking/ shaming/ judging people who lose weight with FDA-approved weight loss medication?!?!! I met @kellyclarkson years ago at GMA and found her to be kind, warm, friendly and of course, talented!  Today, she’s in the headlines for the way in which she has discussed her taking weight loss medication to lose a significant amount of weight. It’s upsetting to see how she’s being attacked for it- for not “telling everything” about which drug she takes, etc.  People: THATS HER CHOICE!  It’s not for anyone to say how, when, if or why she should talk about it. She’s a person, and just because she’s a public figure doesn’t mean that the fundamental rules of decency, privacy, autonomy etc etc don’t apply to her.  The fat shaming is out of control: people attack those who are overweight and then attack those who lose weight. As a doctor who is board-certified in Obesity Medicine, I know just how damaging and dangerous this is.  Would we attack someone who talked about taking an antidepressant for mental illness/ depression? Weight should be no different.  Imagine how absurd this would be if she were talking about how she’s been taking “a medication” for depression, and didn’t say which one… would people be attacking her for that? I think not.  Kelly, I applaud you for taking the steps to improve your health by losing a significant amount of weight.  Not everyone can access or afford these medications, which desperately needs to change so even more people can be helped. Jennifer Ashton Instagram - 3 things I never drink/ eat as a Nutritionist: 1) Soda (regular OR Diet). Adult women have approx 55% of our bodies made up of water, not soda.  Therefore, this is the liquid our bodies need. Period. 
2) processed/ deli meats: yes it’s protein BUT… these meats tend to be lower in protein than other kinds of meat because other animal parts are added. They are also very high in sodium and saturated fat. Processed meats are concidered carcinogenic (due to containing nitrites to extend shelf life)  and linked to heart disease and diabetes. 
3) anything labeled “fat free”… watch the above for why…

Jennifer Ashton Instagram - The relationship between the gut bacteria and systemic estrogen levels still remains unclear and research into the estrobolome is still in its infancy (even though it was first defined over ten years ago). There are bacteria in the gut that can either help eliminate excess estrogen or recycle it and send it back into our systemic circulation.  There is early research looking at the interaction of the estrobolome and effects on endometriosis, menopause, estrogen positive breast cancer, chronic pelvic pain, infertility and PCOS but there is no peer-reviewed evidence or accepted standard yet for testing stool or blood to determine levels of an enzyme called Beta-glucuronidase activity in the gut (so beware of any service offering this). BUT we do know the things that are good for the gut microbiome and estrobolome: high fiber diet, fermented foods, being around nature and pets, avoiding unnecessary antibiotics, minimizing added sugar, alcohol…this is nutritional gynecology and I’m here for it! It’s why I got a masters degree in nutrition from Columbia in 2016. It’s about connecting the dots.

This is one of my favorites. Here is what I didn’t explain in the video: 
Coconut oil: I will be talking a lot more about this in future issues of Ajenda, but as a Nutritionist and the daughter of a cardiologist, here is my bottom line on coconut oil: According to Harvard reviews, “in a meta-analysis of 16 clinical trials, coconut oil was found to increase both LDL and HDL cholesterol levels in participants, compared with nontropical vegetable oils (e.g., sunflower, canola, olive). Coconut oil increased total cholesterol by about 15 points, LDL by 10 points, and HDL by 4 points. Coconut oil also increased these values when compared with another tropical oil, palm oil: total cholesterol increased by about 25 points, LDL by 20 points, and HDL by 3 points. The analysis did not find that coconut oil versus other vegetable oils had any significant effect on body weight, waist circumference, or body fat percentage.
The American Heart Association (AHA) issued a scientific advisory statement in 2017 to replace saturated fats (including coconut and other tropical oils) with unsaturated fats. “ (reference: Harvard Health). What I do like about Violife vegan cream cheese is that it is vegan and nut free, so I do occasionally use it. 

Smoked Salmon: there is a great local and very historic deli near me in NYC that has the best smoked salmon, but when I am in LA or Boston, I use packaged smoked salmon.  There is no difference in the nutritional value.  Smoked salmon is packed with omega-3 fatty acids which are great for the heart, brain, and skin.

Jennifer Ashton Instagram - BYA: this has been part of my 6 month experiment with @korey.rowe : it’s a strength   mobility move that gets in HIIT cardio, balance and power.  I started these unloaded, and now, 10 weeks in, I hold 10-15 lb dumbbells in each hand, and do 3 sets of 12 reps each.  My right leg is my weaker leg (when I used to perform surgery, I used to rest my right leg on the base of the OR table so my left leg has always been stronger: it’s very obvious here! ) The subtle distinction is the double pulse at the bottom and the effort of keeping the non standing leg at a right angle : hip and knee.  This is another example of unilateral training, that has helped to make me much stronger.

I met @kellyclarkson years ago at GMA and found her to be kind, warm, friendly and of course, talented!  Today, she’s in the headlines for the way in which she has discussed her taking weight loss medication to lose a significant amount of weight. It’s upsetting to see how she’s being attacked for it- for not “telling everything” about which drug she takes, etc.  People: THATS HER CHOICE!  It’s not for anyone to say how, when, if or why she should talk about it. She’s a person, and just because she’s a public figure doesn’t mean that the fundamental rules of decency, privacy, autonomy etc etc don’t apply to her.  The fat shaming is out of control: people attack those who are overweight and then attack those who lose weight. As a doctor who is board-certified in Obesity Medicine, I know just how damaging and dangerous this is.  Would we attack someone who talked about taking an antidepressant for mental illness/ depression? Weight should be no different.  Imagine how absurd this would be if she were talking about how she’s been taking “a medication” for depression, and didn’t say which one… would people be attacking her for that? I think not.  Kelly, I applaud you for taking the steps to improve your health by losing a significant amount of weight.  Not everyone can access or afford these medications, which desperately needs to change so even more people can be helped. Jennifer Ashton - 6.6K Likes - The relationship between the gut bacteria and systemic estrogen levels still remains unclear and research into the estrobolome is still in its infancy (even though it was first defined over ten years ago). There are bacteria in the gut that can either help eliminate excess estrogen or recycle it and send it back into our systemic circulation.  There is early research looking at the interaction of the estrobolome and effects on endometriosis, menopause, estrogen positive breast cancer, chronic pelvic pain, infertility and PCOS but there is no peer-reviewed evidence or accepted standard yet for testing stool or blood to determine levels of an enzyme called Beta-glucuronidase activity in the gut (so beware of any service offering this). BUT we do know the things that are good for the gut microbiome and estrobolome: high fiber diet, fermented foods, being around nature and pets, avoiding unnecessary antibiotics, minimizing added sugar, alcohol…this is nutritional gynecology and I’m here for it! It’s why I got a masters degree in nutrition from Columbia in 2016. It’s about connecting the dots.

Coconut oil: I will be talking a lot more about this in future issues of Ajenda, but as a Nutritionist and the daughter of a cardiologist, here is my bottom line on coconut oil: According to Harvard reviews, “in a meta-analysis of 16 clinical trials, coconut oil was found to increase both LDL and HDL cholesterol levels in participants, compared with nontropical vegetable oils (e.g., sunflower, canola, olive). Coconut oil increased total cholesterol by about 15 points, LDL by 10 points, and HDL by 4 points. Coconut oil also increased these values when compared with another tropical oil, palm oil: total cholesterol increased by about 25 points, LDL by 20 points, and HDL by 3 points. The analysis did not find that coconut oil versus other vegetable oils had any significant effect on body weight, waist circumference, or body fat percentage.
The American Heart Association (AHA) issued a scientific advisory statement in 2017 to replace saturated fats (including coconut and other tropical oils) with unsaturated fats. “ (reference: Harvard Health). What I do like about Violife vegan cream cheese is that it is vegan and nut free, so I do occasionally use it. 

Smoked Salmon: there is a great local and very historic deli near me in NYC that has the best smoked salmon, but when I am in LA or Boston, I use packaged smoked salmon.  There is no difference in the nutritional value.  Smoked salmon is packed with omega-3 fatty acids which are great for the heart, brain, and skin.

Jennifer Ashton - 3.2K Likes - BYA: this has been part of my 6 month experiment with @korey.rowe : it’s a strength   mobility move that gets in HIIT cardio, balance and power.  I started these unloaded, and now, 10 weeks in, I hold 10-15 lb dumbbells in each hand, and do 3 sets of 12 reps each.  My right leg is my weaker leg (when I used to perform surgery, I used to rest my right leg on the base of the OR table so my left leg has always been stronger: it’s very obvious here! ) The subtle distinction is the double pulse at the bottom and the effort of keeping the non standing leg at a right angle : hip and knee.  This is another example of unilateral training, that has helped to make me much stronger.

Since I am proactive about every other aspect of my health and wellness, I am moving towards a state of “rarely” consuming alcohol. (I will definitely make an exception when I’m on vacation) And while I do dry JENuary every year, this is the first year that I’ve continued it into February.  Anyone else? #dryjanuary #tequila
