December 1, 1990: The single “I’m Your Baby Tonight” hit #1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the R&B Singles Chart!
“She went into the studio, cut the lead vocal for the chorus and stacked her vocals, doubling and tripling her original vocal perfectly. Then she laid down the first track of background vocals, the second track of backgrounds, the harmony parts. I was blown away … I had never heard anybody sound that good, ever. Not even close.” – L.A. Reid

December 5, 1992: “I Will Always Love You” reached #1 on the Billboard Hot R&B Singles Chart, becoming the longest-running Number One on the R&B charts at the time. The New York Times wrote “Houston transforms a plaintive country ballad into a towering pop-gospel assertion of lasting devotion to a departed lover. Her voice breaking and tensing, she treats the song as a series of emotional bursts in a steady climb toward a final full-out declamation. Along the way, her virtuosic gospel embellishments enhance the emotion and never seem merely ornamental.”
December 4, 1990 (33 years ago today): “All The Man That I Need” was released as the second single from Whitney’s ‘I’m Your Baby Tonight’ album. Written by Michael Gore and Dean Pitchford, the song was originally recorded by Linda Clifford in 1982. Whitney’s version was produced by Narada Michael Walden and features a saxophone solo by Kenny G. It went on to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and the Adult Contemporary chart, becoming her first single to simultaneously top those three Billboard charts. The song was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Performance at the 34th GRAMMY Awards and nominated for Best R&B/Soul Single, Female at the 6th Soul Train Music Awards.

“What that song did for me, what Whitney did for me … was to inspire me to love myself, be myself …” – Keara Hailey Gordon on her experience in the “Greatest Love of All” music video. 💜 The song reached #1 on the Adult Contemporary Chart on this day in 1986.

On November 28, 1992, Whitney’s iconic rendition of “I Will Always Love You” reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. “I think Dolly Parton is a hell of a writer and a hell of a singer. I was so concerned when I sang her song how she’d feel about it, in terms of the arrangement, my licks, my flavor. When she said she was floored, that meant so much to me.” – Whitney Houston
Originally from ‘The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album,’ the song spent 14 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 — a record at that time and Whitney’s longest run atop the chart. The track became a juggernaut, topping charts all over the world and winning critical acclaim. It won GRAMMYs in 1994 for Record of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female. In 2020, “I Will Always Love You” was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry, and in January 2022 it was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America.
‘The Preacher’s Wife’ soundtrack was released on this day in 1996 — in advance of the film of the same name. It remains the best-selling gospel album of all time. “She was a very confident vocalist. … I don’t mean she was arrogant or conceited, but after she sang a song three or four times, I think she had a sense she had done enough takes. So she would say, ‘You have enough?’” 😂 – Producer Mervyn Warren
The album is now available on vinyl (pressed on either black or yellow) for the first time ever! Link in bio.

Gerry Griffith, former A&R executive at Arista Records, said: “Her first recorded song ‘You Give Good Love’ was a one-take vocal. We were all in the studio in awe … There’s Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, and then Whitney Houston. Everyone is still trying to copy those three.”
Whitney performed the last show of the U.S. leg of her ‘My Love Is Your Love World Tour’ in Los Angeles, California on this day in 1999. The tour was one of the most popular tours of Whitney’s career, playing over 60 shows in Europe and North America. Dolce & Gabbana designed all of her clothes for the tour.

“The greatest gift a song could ever have is a voice like Whitney Houston singing something you wrote. … She just happened to have this amazing, amazing gift, but underneath it all she was such a good person.” #MyLoveIsYourLove25
