Thank you to my awesome, smart, talented colleagues on our new project who already are a gift to work with but who bowled up this superb #workbirthday surprise today and look how beautiful it is. I could barely stand to eat it and then discovered that I really actually could. Cake is from @flourandstone … many pistachios and teeny tiny rosebuds came to great harm. ❤️ thanks team

One of the greatest cooking tips I was ever given (I think it was from @alicekateryan thank you) – was to put a Parmesan rind into my minestrone while cooking. It enhances the depth of flavour to a startling degree. Also works with bolognese but of course that is advice best run by @benshewry who has spent more time in the lab on this one than I. So I never throw away a Parmesan rind. I wrap it and pop it in the freezer for future use. I have been working some very long hours of late and a couple of days ago I decided to take a quick break while the kettle was boiling and consolidate my cheese rinds. Yes, there were TWENTY in my freezer. Fortunately, winter is coming. 🧀
Statice update 🤓 from a beautiful couple of days spent at @st_albans_courthouse feeling a million miles from anywhere and replacing the noise of everything just for a little while with king parrots, whip birds and the gentle murmur (!) of cockies. Also peacocks from across the valley at @settlersarmsinn. And a truly spectacular thunderstorm. Mostly work related reading but I cheated periodically with @huahsu’s extraordinary memoir of youthful loss, Stay True. Lucky to be able to hide away for a few days, I know. Thinking of those who can’t.

@adelaidewritersweek event with two very funny and gimlet-eyed observers of politics – @cathywilcoxtagram and The Guardian’s British sketch writer John Crace – and my brain was ENTIRELY occupied (just for a minute, I recovered) – with Wilcox’s shoes. Outstanding. Update: I’m told these shoes are made by @prestonzly – news that will now probably impoverish me.
It was an honour to vigorously discuss life, lasagne and all things obsession with the amazing @annabelcrabb for @adelaidewritersweek Huge gratitude Annabel and thank you to an awesome Adelaide crowd! #writer #literature #interview

Beautiful day at @adelaidewritersweek … @ozbrooks100 Geraldine Brooks has just cracked up the crowd by asking, in her wry and gentle way, “does anyone remember what it was like when if you didn’t know something, you just didn’t know it?” Great discussion with @juliabaird and @realrachelkushner and @mrdavidmarr

Oooooffff look how lovely these are. Always interesting to see what @brett_mcmahon_studio dishes up, and this time it’s twisty knotty gums and undergrowth … absolutely glorious. Insta tells me it’s inspired by the Awakabal Reserve … opening on Thursday (Feb 6) at @nandahobbs 🙌🏻

New column up at @abcnews_au – a brief history of Australia’s bone-crunching arguments about tariffs. And a stinging riposte to the doubters and haters who said you couldn’t get Bianca Censori into a column about trade barriers. IN YOUR FACES. Online now at ABC site or through link in my bio. Trade nicely and have a great day.

Headsup politics nerds! As the federal election campaign clears its throat preparatory to the 2025 democratic event, @patskarvelas and the best political reporters and analysts in the business are already cranking out daily updates in a new podcast series called Politics Now. If a big story breaks – like the PM’s public consideration of troops for Ukraine or the Coalition’s announcement today that it will end work-from-home for federal public servants – Pats and her contact book will be at your disposal to take it apart with blistering speed. In fact, the WFH episode has just dropped, with the brilliant @claudzilla____ offering some perspectives on the Opposition’s policy and of course Ukraine. Make sure you have this pod in your feed during the campaign. Why wait for great analysis when it can be had with such speed? If you’re already following the Party Room it’ll pop into your feed anyway. And yes, @frankellyabc will still be there on Thursdays for The Party Room, plus David Speers’s deep dive interviews on Saturdays. A wealth of options!
Dear God, he’s spreading across the continent. The nation’s leading Adelaide-based faux German accordionist, Hans, is bedazzling @adlfringe for a handful of remaining shows (check @accordionhans for details) then fanning out over the landscape as outlined in the schedule above. Lock up your, I don’t know, probably everyone. There’s a reason Hans became a surprise breakout star on America’s Got Talent – he’s a slicing-sharp comedic brain and a warm heart dressed like an explosion in Lincraft’s dance-mum aisle. Pop it in your diaries, darlings ✨
