My adult daughter has moved out of home and it’s CRUSHING. Her new place of residence features a gang of friendly baby Gang Gangs. Which now adds topnotes of TEARING ENVY to the emotional mix. UPDATE!!! Thank you to @kerrynevillegestier who points out that the pictured floof-heads are not in fact babies but adult males! There are babies too but they are not in this shot and I think possibly the ridiculously excellent floofs emerge with time? My own head-floof did not emerge fully until adulthood so this makes sense to me
So thrilled to read that this incredible image by @tonyalbert is to be included in the first ever Australian exhibit in the @rencontresarles this year – the world’s longest running photography festival I believe? The show is called “On Country: Photography From Australia” and runs July – October in Arles. Swipe for details and other brilliant Australian participants. I will never forget seeing this work and others in Albert’s Warakurna Superheroes series – I wandered into a Fremantle gallery with my friend @suedale1 and there they were, in all their extraordinary colours, leaping out of their frames and grabbing at me. How beautiful to think these works are gong to France to enthrall gallery-wanderers there. Thanks @photofestivalau and @sullivanstrumpf from whose Insta accounts I inexpertly copied these images, and congrats all. Have a good day, champions ❤️

Camp Fries. Boil a bunch of bog-standard washed potatoes whole, skin on, until they start to peel and crack. Drain. Let cool. Slice thickly and toss with seasoned flour (I like rice flour and you can use spices of your choice, cumin, smoked paprika, coriander all good) Fry in butter and oil in a heavy pan until crispy and golden. Salt and serve. Also trading as: Sorry about the mean April Fools Day prank, kids* *See immediately previous post
The beauty of sunrise is fleeting. The joy of waking your kids on April Fools Day and telling them the clocks have gone forward and they’re already late for school though… Well. That stays with you ALL DAY. They are so gullible at that hour. Especially the one with a Maths test first period. 💅
An extraordinary and expectation-defying three years. But some recent mistakes show that when you start being the bookies’ favourite, life gets a lot more challenging. My new column – on the fortunes of aspiring PM Peter Dutton – is up now at @abcnews_au … head to the site or follow the link in my bio.
Peeps I’ve just sat up late writing an account of the (paywalled) first leaders’ debate of the 2025 election campaign on Sky News and it will be posted early pearly on @abcnews_au so if you happen to wake in fright around 5am, do have a look!
The paperbark. Looking superb in dawn light regardless of prevailing global conditions. Have a good day champions.

Saw this in a corporate office I waltzed through today. Couldn’t see anything identifying the artist but whoever you are: Your work made my day noticeably more pleasant (and I was already having quite a good time) so thank you! ##UPDATE### Thank you, Hive Mind! The artist is @elizabeth_oconnor, I am informed!!! And now to do a deep dive in a short work break 🤣
New column up at @abcnews_au … International Women’s Day, but with pig hunting and Oval Office cage fights. Link to the article is in my bio. And apologies to @arusbridger for the possibly unfair reflection on his Bro Rating. I’m sure Alan fights like a Kodiak bear when in a corner. 😊 ALSO: thanks to @leightonkin_ for “making masculinity grate again”. Chefs kiss 🤌
Finished work for the day. Now for the post-knockoff bits of additional typing that still need to be done before dawn. Thank you @dinosaur_designs and @salvosstores for the discarded bling ❤️
Flying visit to the @worldsciencefestivalbrisbane with @leigh_sales at the weekend where the pair of us learned – live on stage from the magically-gifted marine biologist and “Secrets Of The Octopus” creator @alex.schnell – that an octopus’s penis is actually its eighth arm. (Do not ask me how the conversation turned this way, it wasn’t planned to. And apologies to the record-breaking NASA astronaut @astro_christina and the founder of the @worldscifest @brian_greene111, who may not have anticipated our on-stage digression into octo-tackle) The Argonaut Octopus, I subsequently read, will sometimes detach the relevant arm after mating and hurry away from the scene, given that females will sometimes kill and eat them after the biologically-imperative elements of the hookup are complete. IT GROWS BACK. I honestly worry that @leigh_sales will not recover from this reveal. And sorry about grubbying up your lovely festival, Brian. Follow @alex.schnell for more astounding cephalopod facts – she knows a LOT about giant cuttlefish and they are DEEPLY weird. We are coming back to Brisbane and @atqpac for a @chat10looks3 show on May 9 … consider yourselves warned that this content may be revisited.
Peeps! You have until 8pm tonight to enrol to vote, or to update your enrolment if you’ve moved. So if you’ve turned 18, or become a citizen, or moved house since the 2022 election .. get on it! You have till 8pm tonight, local time, across Australia. Head to the @auselectoralcom website and also I would advise following @auselectoralcom for updates on how to vote! There are lots of options… you can prepoll, postal vote, or vote at your local polling booth…. Also just your regular reminder that everyone around Australia votes exactly the same way thanks to our independent electoral authority, not that I’m inviting a comparison with the US where politicians run elections and in some states they elect JUDGES omg okay maybe I am@inviting a comparison, I love America and they have got a lot of things right over the years but this particular thing, woah. Please be nice to the AEC officials you meet, they are usually ordinary Aussies helping out cos they love elections. Okay that’s it!
The first ever Ute – designed in Australia 90 years ago. But it wasn’t until 2016 that the Ute really came to dominate new vehicle sales in Australia, creating Ute Man as a potent political identity. But what’s the real story of Ute Man? In my new column for @abcnews_au I argue that he’s actually two car salesmen and a tax accountant in a Driza-Bone … check the website or my bio for links and DRIVE SAFELY

JUST LANDED!!! @patskarvelas and I are discussing the current and historic fortunes of Liberal leader @peterduttonmp in today’s edition of Politics Now. Swipe for the podcast icon you want: It’s @abcnews_au’s daily feed of election politics anaalysis. In this ep: Is Mr Dutton okay? Why are his colleagues super grumpy right now and getting a bit leaky? Is the Liberal leader about to be overwhelmed by a voter backlash of flexible-working Mums who have absolutely had it up to here with the idea that flexible work isn’t work, and are also unusually strong of core thanks to seven minutes a day of wall Pilates? Note: This photo of me and Pats isn’t from today. We were in separate studios, working-from-work, and so I defaced this old photo of us at the Walkleys last year where we were absolutely on our own dimes. We don’t see each other in person very often. Thank you and have a lovely weekend and don’t forget that @davidspeers2023 will have a cool pod dropping tomorrow on the very same Politics Now feed (look it up wherever you get your pods, or of course on the glorious @abclisten)and you can catch him in his day job on Insiders at 9am Sunday.
