“ಕರಗ ಉತ್ಸವದ ಮೆರವಣಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ, ದ್ರೌಪದಿಯ ಶಕ್ತಿಯು ಹರಡುತ್ತದೆ; ತಿಗಳರ ಹೃದಯದಲ್ಲಿ, ಭಕ್ತಿಯು ತುಂಬುತ್ತದೆ.” “In the procession of the Karaga festival, Draupadi’s power spreads; in the hearts of the Tigala community, devotion overflows.” Rooted in the Mahabharata, the Karaga festival of Karnataka venerates Draupadi as Adi Shakti, honoring her fierce form that once vanquished Timirasura. Celebrated by the Tigala community, this grand nocturnal procession from Bengaluru’s Dharmaraya Swamy Temple sees a priest, symbolizing Draupadi, balancing the sacred Karaga—a floral-crowned pot—on his head, leading sword-wielding Veerakumaras through the city. In a moment of profound syncretism, the parade halts at a Muslim saint’s tomb, a testament to the festival’s spirit of unity. Karaga is not just a ritual; it is a living embodiment of devotion, resilience, and Karnataka’s rich cultural harmony. At Torani, we believe that styling is an extension of storytelling, where every element contributes to the narrative. Rather than sourcing generic accessories, we meticulously crafted bespoke pieces that intertwine traditional artistry with our unique aesthetic. Our custom Parandis, inspired by the South Indian Jada Billai , were hand-embroidered to echo the opulence of bejeweled braids. Similarly, the Tahia, the traditional crown of Odissi dancers , was reimagined using our signature fabrics and motifs. These handcrafted adornments, featuring motifs like the heart (dil), betel leaf (paan), and bird (chidi), embellished with pearls, Swarovski crystals, sequins, and zardozi, not only complemented our garments but also celebrated the depth and richness of handcrafted traditions. Pictured here are Raja Kumari and Koko Baluchi, embodying this harmonious blend of heritage and contemporary design. For the rockstar that Raja Kumari is, a lesser-known truth is that she has a heart as soft as malmal in monsoon—delicate, comforting, and full of grace. Juloos was the biggest vision we’d ever dared to bring to life—bigger than anything we’d rehearsed or known before. And with that came inevitable chaos, slip-ups, and learnings. On the day of her shoot, one of our makeup teams couldn’t reach her on time, but in true Raja spirit, she stepped in like the queen she is—doing her own hair, makeup, and beauty prep with elegance and calm. When I went to apologize, she simply smiled and told me to focus on the set, promising she’d give more than her best. She did—effortlessly. With every look, every shot, every frame, she gave her all. There were quiet hugs and tears of empathy. There was strength, encouragement, and unshakable belief. We had only just met, but I felt deeply seen and supported by her—spiritually connected in the truest sense as artists on a shared journey. Raja, thank you—for your magic, your generosity, and your enormous heart. I hope we come together again to create something even more extraordinary.
