We each can honor Ruth Bader Ginsburg by asking ourselves, “What would Ruth do?” Using this as a guide in our own lives will keep her with us.
We can also honor what she said so recently: “My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.”
The more we learn about her words and deeds, the more she will remain a force in our lives and the world around us.
She left us a clear and precious legacy. It’s up to us to keep her spirit alive.
When Julie Taymor called to say she would like to option my book, “My Life on the Road,” I just said yes, you can do anything you want.
I think she is the great filmmaker of our time, the rare person about whom I hear myself saying the word genius. Have you seen “Across the Universe” or “Frida”? I rest my case.
However, I didn’t have a clue how she could make a movie out of a book that covers at least eight decades and two continents. It is as intimate as my story of having an abortion, and as public as two Marches on Washington a half century apart. I didn’t know – but I just had faith.
She has done this by emotional connections and genius visuals. My favorite is a Greyhound Bus through time. Different people – and different ages of the same person, me included – sit next to each other and talk to each other. They also see different places, faces and highways out of the window.
I have faith in this movie because sharing our stories is the most ancient and true way of learning – we haven’t been sitting around campfires for millennia for nothing – and I hope this will entice you into sharing yours in this Talking Circle.
Even the Internet is a giant campfire. At its best, it is teaching us that we are all passengers on Space Ship Earth. COVID19 is making us feel an intimacy out of shared suffering, and we are learning that Earth is our shared Mother — as Alice Walker says, “Her blue body, everything we know.”
There’s another reason I’m glad that this movie is out there, due to the creative financial forces behind it, any money it makes will support girls and women around the world.

Hope and common sense will meet in Florida this November.
The Republican state legislature continues to deny the existence of climate change as hurricane after hurricane destroys homes and churches, and as barges wash up on front yards.
The overwhelming majority of Floridians voted to restore the voting rights of the formerly incarcerated. In response, Republican state legislators undermined their own constituents by requiring former felons to pay off all court fees and fines in order to vote.
The pattern is clear. It extends to healthcare, to gun laws, and to reproductive rights.
The choice is also clear. It begins with your vote and the candidates below.
@pashaforfl – An entrepreneur and business leader focused on ending corruption and passionate about increasing energy independence, improving air quality, and creating new jobs in Florida.
@johnson4fl – An environmentalist and current representative working to expand access to quality public education.
@franccesca4fl – A dedicated community servant and mentor aiming to fix unemployment assistance and pass common sense gun laws.
@maureenfor105 – An immigration attorney fighting for criminal justice reform, reproductive rights, and immigrant rights.
@ennekingforflorida – A doctor and community leader advocating for Medicaid expansion, better funding for public education, and investment in clean energy.

In 1984, I attended a campaign rally in Pennsylvania where the cheers for the activists were greater than those for the politicians. That day, I realized that any of us who were recognizable as part of a social justice movement had to use ourselves to support the candidates we believed in. However controversial our movements might be, at least voters know that they stand for principles. Being backed by a movement was a signal that politicians are not all alike.
Today, the Democratic candidates running in Pennsylvania make clear they’re not just backed by a movement – they ARE the movement. They are fighting for clean air and clear water, for women’s health and reproductive rights, and for fair wages for working people.
I hope you support and champion them as you would the causes you hold most dear.
@janetdiazforpastatesenate2020 – A Lancaster native passionate about advocating for her community and focused on improving Pennsylvania’s mental healthcare system.
@antonandrewforpa – A former public defender from a working class immigrant family prioritizing environmental protections and common sense gun laws.
@michele.knoll.44 – A committed educator and small business owner advocating for frontline workers, teachers, and unions.
@debciamaccaforpa168 – A U.S. Marine Corps captain, school teacher, and business woman aiming to expand access to affordable healthcare and end gerrymandering.

MICHIGANDERS, YOUR VOTE CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE!
When I was a child, my family lived in southern Michigan, so I know first-hand the kindness, sense of justice and community of people in this state.
Yet now we are facing an administration in Washington, and a man in the White House, with no understanding of the meaning of those words. This is largely because we ourselves have forgotten that democracy, like a tree, grows from the bottom up, not the top down. It doesn’t start in Washington. It starts with us.
Your vote can restore kindness and justice to Michigan – and to Washington
Your vote can make the difference between holding polluters accountable and loosening restrictions even more, thus making children, families and workers more vulnerable to the dangers of PFAS (polyfluoroalkyl substances).
Your vote is the difference between a government that supports organized labor, and one that is devoted to eroding the collective voice of working people.
Your vote is the difference between quality education, no matter what our zip code, and a legislature that transfers money from public schools to to make up for a mismanaged state budget.
All this democracy can begin with these four candidates and with your vote:
@votekellybreen- An city council attorney, parent, and citizen advocate passionate about improving public education, supporting working families, affordable healthcare, and cleaner rivers and lakes.
@barbanness2020- A champion of public education and trustee of the Rochester School Board who believes in transparent leadership, strong public education, and building an infrastructure of renewable energy.
@vote4morse- A former attorney and cancer survivor, who’s fighting for cleaner water, women’s reproductive rights, and a safe, inclusive community for all people.
@votepulver- A registered nurse, patient advocate, and public health expert in containing COVID19 who believes that equitable healthcare is the key to a sustainable, healthy economy.
We are so lucky to have these four trustworthy, expert leaders who are willing to serve. All you have to do is vote!
