This is gonna be hard for some people to hear, but this is all facts. And he spit this 50 years ago. And before you get in here and defend the Jesus he talks about, first be clear what Jesus and God you’re defending. The ones that fit the colonizer’s narrative? Until we can ALL accept America the Beautiful AND America the Ugly, we will always be at odds. And we have to recognize that it’s been designed this way. We who are not a part of the 1% are all in the same boat. We are intentionally distracted by racism when classicism is the true issue. We’re all being oppressed by the same system but as long as we remain distracted, we remain ignorant. We have to get out of our comfort zones. We have to do the work to study how our collective history as fellow Americans is intertwined. As you celebrate Independence Day, recognize that on July 4, 1776, ALL of us were not free to be independent. Thus this day, like “Thanksgiving,” hits different for a lot of Americans. So eat, drink, and be merry, but also raise your consciousness. Together, we still have a lot of work to do. It’s so easy to get caught up in what other people are doing. The only TRUE comparison we need to be concerned with is within ourselves. Did I do better today than I did yesterday? And if not, then take stock and honestly assess why. Make adjustments and go at it again. If we’re truly focused on ways within us to improve our own journey, then we won’t have the time to focus on what other folks are doing. Self care can sometimes be as simple as taking a break from social media to assess in your heart and spirit where you are, as opposed to being seduced by how great we think other people are doing. Everyone has their own journey that we know nothing about. Focus on giving yourself the best of yourself. (FYI, the round kick challenge was in a 3 minute window. I went from 113 to 151 to 210. This resonated with me greatly. I have been blessed, fortunate, and lucky enough (aside from my hard work) to have been able to work my whole life. Granted, I’ve had longer stretches of unemployment than I would have liked, but I’ve had 10 television shows since “Cosby,” some lasting not as long as others. Lol! I work a lot. I can’t even count the auditions I didn’t get. How many times I was told no. How many times I’ve asked, “No matter how good I may be, what’s the point if nobody’s buying what I’m selling?” Success is a long road of no’s with the right yes’s scattered in between.
