The Facts. 23 year old Jaahnavi Kandula, an Indian immigrant studying at Seattle’s Northeastern University, was struck by Seattle police officer Kevin Dave. Her body was thrown more than 100 feet away. She was taken to a hospital. She died. Eight months after the incident, Seattle Police Department released bodycam footage at the scene from Officer Daniel Auderer, VP of the Seattle Police Officers Guild. He is speaking to another officer. His recorded words: “She is dead.” He laughs. “No, it’s a regular person.” He laughs again. “Let’s write a cheque. $11,000. She had limited value.” @HinduSamata, an instagram account hitting over 1 million likes after posting about #JusticeForJaahnavi, has been suspended by Instagram. Many accounts have followed suit. Just the facts.

On an old school train to The Broad Museum and I feel about nine. If old school cars really can make you time travel, I would like to be picked up re: Midnight in Paris lol! Got to see a Basquiat and Warhol painting in the flesh for the first time. Every time I look at this Basquiat painting I see a new meaning 🤯

It was an absolute joy to co-host this celebration at @eastwestplayers with Kavi Ladnier @kaviladnier1111 honouring the revolutionary actress Michelle Yeoh @michelleyeoh_official. Thank you @eastwestplayers for having me. 🙏🏽 I stepped out of the theatre watching Everything Everywhere All at Once blown away, inspired, mighty proud, sending long voice-messages to all my watsapp groups. The movie and performances explored the depths of our contemplative human existence with a brilliant sense of humour. What’s even more inspiring was that it was a movie where an Asian family just happened to be messengers of the creative message; they were just humans on screen. It wasn’t about them being Asian and that’s the next step forward for minority communities in film, which Michelle Yeoh for decades and now with this movie, have pioneered. Asians as humans, special yet the same as everyone else. Thank you for paving the path for all Asians and particularly Asian women. I’m so moved and thrilled about their work, to celebrate Michelle Yeoh, and the movie’s entire team. Truly one of the best films I’ve ever seen. And @michelleyeoh_official, in addition to her exceptional talent, one of the most graceful humans I’ve met. If you haven’t already, I state the obvious, watch it. Let’s all celebrate this revolutionary work. 🎉

There is so much tragedy in the world, and I often overlook all of the wonderful things that are also happening. As much as I see the problems of the world, there is also beauty and love. Here are a few stories from this past year that remind me of all the good that is happening. What moments have made you smile this year and last? Seen above: 1. Michelle Yeoh wins Golden Globe Award. She dedicates it to all minority actors. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-64232678 2. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is named person of the year. Walking to acting class in Italy, hand in hand, with my favourite pal Andrea and the best company this nerd could ask for, my artistic soulmates @gracemoonarts. Sharing the work so rigorously developed by Michèle Lonsdale Smith with so many European artists who are relentlessly open about their love of art, without any shame or embarrassment. Reading plays, putting up classic texts, the artists dream. #makeartnotwar 💕

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to study acting with my family @gracemoonarts in the Tobago inaugural retreat, piloted by Michèle Lonsdale•Smith. This trip is the happiest I’ve been in years. Acting in front of the ocean, 🤯 (literally), living in community, eating roti, and running into a tribe of horses while doing animal work as a horse, ha! I don’t know if they understood what I was saying as I was knawwing on my knees in excitement, but it was mostly, holy shit! I’ve watched this video, I don’t know, probably 50 times by now. Every time I watch it, I can’t believe I’m part of this community…and then I proceed to re-watch. I love watching and rewatching everyone’s work in this, filled with love for acting, regardless of where we are in the world. Hearing our coach tell us our job, “to match the ocean” – when I find myself so often caught up in the tides of life. Anyways, I could go on and on, and really I’ll probably write a poem about the experience, but I mostly wanted to share this incredibly beautiful video created by @randallmross displaying so truly the acting and love work @gracemoonarts practices. This is everything. This is everyone. The artists I love most ♥️
Inspired.
Part one of Charlie Chaplin’s revolutionary monologue from his movie The Great Dictator. This monologue keeps coming back to my thoughts. In a time where power and greed has blinded humanity, this monologue couldn’t be more relevant. This speech still matters today. Film: The Great Dictator Monologue’s Screenwriter: Sir Charlie Chaplin
