Reliving this special moment with my parents, sharing the news that they will soon be first-time grandparents to our baby girl! I gave my dad a fake belated Father’s Day gift (it was a pretty bad gift, haha) and hid the sonogram at the bottom of the package! I had the honor of attending the Transforming Lives, Restoring Hope event for A New Way of Life—a foundation focused on giving newly released female inmates the tools and opportunity to choose a new path forward. Susan Burton, who was formerly incarcerated herself, has committed her life to giving women leaving prison a home, a chance to rehabilitate, and the skills to rebuild. In CA, about 65% of inmates are arrested again within 3 years, and America’s recidivism rate is one of the highest in the world—70% within 5 years. Interestingly, Norway has one of the lowest recidivism rates in the world (20%), in part because it focuses on rehabilitation during incarceration. Our rehabilitation programs haven’t been as effective; we must improve those programs as a key pillar of addressing crime. Susan, thank you for the way in which you have helped empower hundreds of women. I was lucky to meet some of them and loved hearing their remarkable stories of transformation. Dr. Sara Safari is an extraordinary woman who went from never having camped or climbed a mountain to speaking a wild dream into reality—climbing Everest! That dream and intent to raise a few thousand dollars for one charity transformed into her becoming the first Iranian to summit all 7 of the world’s tallest summits and raise $1 million for 7 charities! Sometimes, you can’t even begin to imagine what’s in store for you. It’s all about taking that first step. Great to be with you, Orange County! I’m 6.5 months pregnant now and wanted to send a shout-out/major respect to mothers and working mothers who are on their own version of the campaign trail every day! My plan is to prioritize the backbone of our state—our small businesses. It’s important that we work toward win-win solutions, like providing tax incentives for businesses to offer childcare for their workers. Entrepreneurs are already superheroes; starting a business is scary! Let’s make it easier, with fewer taxes and regulations, not harder, for them to succeed. And let’s create an environment in which they can support the other backbone of our state—our laborers! Workers often cite childcare transport as some of their biggest hurdles in getting to work. Despite our challenges, California is the best place to live. Let’s work to fulfill our potential! I loved visiting California’s Central Valley. It’s the epicenter of our state’s renewable energy industry, and feeds the nation. But, it has been ignored for far too long by our elected leaders, including my opponents. In the past year alone, their lackluster efforts to engage with this part of California shows how little they genuinely care about the people of this state when it doesn’t serve their own special interests. Despite being an economic engine that fuels California, the Central Valley remains overlooked. A staggering 70% of kids can’t read at grade level. Illiteracy is linked to incarceration and homelessness, and that is a foundational issue that impacts our entire state. The Central Valley is also known for its Latino population, the backbone of agriculture. Among the polling candidates, I’m the only Spanish speaker. I am uniquely positioned to bridge the communication gap and champion the concerns of the Central Valley. Our state’s diversity is our strength, and I am committed in representing all Californians in all corners of our state.
It’s glaringly obvious—the way migrants enter our country needs to change. It’s not safe for them, and the broken system encourages illegal immigration because crossing illegally is often faster for asylum seekers to get into the states. We need more resources for border patrol, more judges for asylum cases (currently backed up several years), and the political will to make our immigration processes more efficient, including a path to citizenship. Children are the unspoken victims of failed immigration policies. They don’t deserve to be subjected to the cruelty and hardship of the cartel’s human trafficking machine. When I visited this shelter, I was heartened by the spirit and innocence of the kids in the face of adversity.
