The year of the MERMAID has descended upon us! 🧜♀️ It’s a long road ahead, with a script to polish, money to raise, a team to build, roles to cast… But my god is it EXCITING 😍✨ After a hectic few weeks focusing on other projects- it’s time to reactivate Director (& Producer!) mode on this baby & get my film @asraifilm moving again! 🙌🏼 Despite Italy calling me- my mind turns to the Victorian railway scene- where Asrais Mother boards a steam train as she abandons the “cursed child”, the London Slum where her other Mother tragically takes her last breath, after battling illness for so long- leaving Asrai at only 5 years old to survive the poverty stricken underbelly of society- all alone. We also need a Witches cavern, adorned with potions, seashells & a large calm shell font, for the Merbaby to be ceremoniously “bathed in”. Our final location we are beginning to search for, is a damp and dingy dungeon, with twin cells. Metal bars, to let the moonlight illuminate Asrai, as she huddled up, bound & beaten, awaiting her sacrificial execution. When I was diagnosed with Chronic Back Pain & degenerative discs at 17 years old, I was told I’d probably never be an Actress. Excuse me- but f**k those Doctors. 🙄 When facing a lifelong disability the LAST thing you need is to be told what (they think) you CANT DO. It would be much more helpful to focus on what you CAN DO. And look at ways you can adapt to make it work for you. (Even though I struggled to sit/stand/walk, there’s so many types of Acting which demand differently of our bodies- like voiceovers! ALSO- what happened to disabled representation on screen 🤨) A difficult diagnosis, doesn’t mean the end, it’s a pivot on your path. Sure my career looks a little different to how I once imagined, but there is still space for me 🙏🏼 as there is space for all of us. 🙌🏼 We NEED people from all walks of life on screen. For the tapestry of Cinema is woven with the vast colours of different peoples perspectives and different peoples experiences. You are everything that came BEFORE & everything that is still to COME! ✨🙏🏼 From my first film as an extra in Bollywood movie (Desi Boys!) to leading roles in movie’s premiering at Leicester Square! The last decade has been a WILD ride!! As I step into the next decade ahead of me, I’m reminded of how every single film set I have been fortunate to step foot on has shaped who I am and the glorious career I’ve been lucky to have so far. 🩷 When my mother was pregnant with me, my parents were advised I would be a very sick baby and would never live a normal life. From being bullied so bad, I was even strangled on the school bus, to attending over 7 schools due to moving house so that frequently that I struggled to retain friendships. After an accident at work during my GCSE’s, and discovering I had early onset osteoporosis, I was told I’d probably never walk properly again and I’d certainly never have a career in film, so I dropped out of performing arts college. I then fell pregnant at 19, had my beautiful daughter, fell again at 21 and tragically lost my second baby- I guess the doctors were right- I was not born to live a ‘normal’ life- the resistance against my existence has been FIERCE. Today we’re picking up the pieces, tomorrow we’re building them into something better & for sure STRONGER than before. 🎥♥️ Suffered some serious heartbreak yesterday over not completing the Instagram challenge that I’ve poured my heart & soul into for the whole of January. It was my fault. I did the survey a day late 😓 After looking forward to completing the thing, with an imaginary gold star & pat on the back- I sat in disbelief during the awards call, absolutely balling my eyes out. Feelings of disappointment, failure and anger all washed over me. Culminating in total heartbreak 💔 Did you see my post last week about the Diamond being formed under pressure? I guess this one is on me for calling on that analogy. My diamond obviously wasn’t done yet 😂💎 I had hoped to end this chapter with some sort of validation, that all my effort was recognised & I got to be in that 3% of people who kept their commitment & finished the challenge. But, since spending all night weeping into my wine, whilst reading all your beautiful messages, I’ve come out of it with something else entirely…. ✨ I’ve learnt I still have a lot of work to do regarding seeking external validation. Especially in the film industry, that kinda need can become toxic and eat you up. ✨ I’ve accepted I did keep the commitment to myself- to post a reel every day. That’s what I sat down and promised myself. Survey or no Survey. I fucking kept my promise. ✨ I’ve realised, by showing up consistently, sharing more of myself & being honest with my struggles, that so many of you are on this journey with me, cheering me on, offering your genuine kindness & support. ♥️ And so after that rollercoaster, as we enter the next chapter of this wild journey of life together, I hope that as much as you’ve helped me- that I can return the favour, in any small way, supporting you through your struggles, celebrating with you your wins, so that together we take those small, but MIGHTY steps towards success 🎥✨♥️
“I have a film I’d like you to star in, but I don’t have a plane” ✈️ “I’m sure I could find one” 🙋🏻♀️ And so I did 🎥 *at the amazing @blackhangarstudios ✈️ “In Flight” was the first film I officially Produced (after previously putting together a small film challenge piece). From learning how to craft a Crowdfunder, to learning how to create release forms and contracts. To sourcing, booking and organising the location, then getting together extras- driving round collecting kit- and even staying up half the night with my sis preparing pasta for the catering. It stings doesn’t it? ☠️ Social media has severely increased the JEALOUSY us creatives can feel seeing others on set, booking gigs, attending premieres…. It can sting feeling like everyone is busy & you’re still waiting for the phone to ring 👀 And then when you finally do BOOK a job, comparison creeps in. It’s not as good as that persons gig. It’s not as big as my last role. It’s not as much money as so and so gets. STOP 🛑 STOP RIGHT THERE ✋ Stop letting the jealousy creep in, letting comparison rob your ✨JOY✨ There’s 2 things to remember when you start feeling this way: 1. Social media is SNIPPETS. Usually carefully curated HIGHLIGHTS of people’s lives 🙏🏼 It may be some of their life- but it’s not the whole picture. ♥️ 2. We are all on our own journey… Each of us have a different path to take. Some people may look like they are “winning” the race. But the truth is- it was never a race. Trees don’t race to reach the sun. River droplets don’t race to the sea. They LIED when they said the first day back would be the hardest. 👀 The first day back is a day of slowly easing yourself in. You go into it tentatively, unsure of what’s ahead. It’s the second day that STINGS. 😩 Realising how far back you’ve fallen, accepting physically and mentally what still lies ahead. Last year, while I was Mermaid training, I was learning how to equalise for the first time. And I fucked up. I didn’t perforate my eardrum, but I did something. It hurt like hell for months, even putting my head underwater in the bath was painful. A Mermaid who can’t swim? 😧 Forced to put my training on hold, I was so anxious what this might mean for the movie- if I wasn’t able to swim underwater (kinda an important thing for a Mermaid 😂) then how could we go ahead…. Finally, I was prescribed some steroids. It cleared up the pain. But I was still very anxious to return. Last week I had my first swim. I went very gently, just testing my ear. All seemed to be okay. Did a few slow lengths and swiftly bolted it. 😅 Jumping in the water today, it was time to test where I’m really at. I can feel such a drop in my fitness, also realising I need to readjust my body to opening my eyes underwater, and strengthening the technique to hold my nose again too (neither come naturally to me). It was a shock.
