This is an actual puzzle. I want to make love to it. (From a puzzle artwork series by Alma Haser @almahaser). 🧩🎨🎉
Happy Birthday me. This is what 48 looks like with the dandelions in my backyard.
I wrote a long, long, long post for my patrons this morning.
I also wrote a goddamn best-selling book about asking so I am not afraid to do it: for my birthday, if you want to give me a gift, please honor me, my work, my life, and my ability to survive by becoming one of my patrons. I’m at 18,000 and I’d love to get to 20,000 by the end of the day. Join for a dollar. Or even just hop on for free and see how you like getting the (frequent) posts for all followers.
I just posted my monthly “State of All Things” post, birthday edition, to my paying patrons, and the link is here and in stories.

I love you all so much.
From the bottom of my art heart, thank you for being on this ride with me.

BOOK EVENTS!! And…sexy new author photo time! I never wear my hair down but I’m getting brave so you better believe I’m serious about getting back into being an author this year. ✍️
Fate dealt me a great hand when I was working away in the @porter_square_books café a few months ago and @markostow asked if he could take my portrait. And boom, beautiful new author photo for me! And at the same time, I’ve been steeped in so many incredible new books and made friends with so many POWERHOUSE GODDAMN WRITERS from the NY area…and hell, I have my own venue….so I decided to connect all the dots and I’m hosting three salon-style “in conversation” events this month at @gravesidevariety, my little crowdfunded hidey-hole in Woodstock, Ny.
Co-presented by our local indie @goldennotebookbookstore , only 50 tickets for every conversation (all tickets are $25 and help keep the venue afloat) and will include a Q&A with me and each author. We are also curating a special book sale table for each event! There’ll be coffee and tea and tears and truth and I hope you all make the trip. This is the way I really wanna say goodbye to this iteration of this venue: with stories that don’t usually get told. With stories that matter. Come share in the moment.
More info and all tickets @ gravesidevariety.com
I’ll be throwing down with authors:
Elizabeth Lesser (bestsellers “Broken Open” and “Cassandra Speaks: WHEN WOMEN ARE THE STORYTELLERS,
THE HUMAN STORY CHANGES”)
May 12th – 12:30pm
@elizlesser
Katherine Yeske Taylor (author of brand-new “SHE’S A BAD ASS: Women in Rock Shaping Feminism”)
May 18th – 1pm
@kyt_in_nyc
Leslie Jamison (author of best-selling “The Recovering” and the new – incredible – “Splinters”)
Jun 1st @ 1pm
Get tickets FAST. Leslie’s day is nearing sold out. These are gonna be so so cosy and good. Read the books and come armed with questions !!!

Happy Sunday All.
Me and my boy in Harvard Square at @thehourly02138 with Brendon and Geeta. Old friends. New eras. Old bricks. New patterns. Old habits. New hearts. Old glasses. New eyes.
It’s spring and the pink blossoms are exploding and falling on the bricks, melting into time. Some things are so short. These blossoms.
We have had a season (or two, or three, or fourteen?) of loss, but the remnants of loss are so precious, so fragile, so delicious. Lilies and coffins. Sandwiches and urns.
Much of the day was spent explaining real estate, Harvard, forces of good and evil, education, money, protests, and war. Ash is wide open. His heart is filling with power. I love this.
I love having an eight year old. It really did go so fast.
I have been more inspired to write than ever before, and want to take to my desk this week to write about Star Wars, the myths children need in order to survive the relentless darkness of intergenerational trauma, and….lots of stuff. So many beautiful threads to connect in my little heart and head. I’ll publish, if I write, on the substack and cross-post to the patrons as usual.
I am feeling so…loved. So secure, for the first time in a long time. And feeling so much love for all of you. This fragile season. May we all flourish. Wherever this finds you, I hope you’re feeling the cracks of light hitting your face, as I am.
Happy spring. 🌱🎉

This is the first time in my life I’ve sat down to have a birthday party while somewhere across the earth, I missed a funeral for a dear friend. At 6pm we laid the table and Ash picked flowers and helped decorated the cake, while somewhere on Palm Beach on Waiheke in Tomorrowland, @danikacharity read the poem I wrote today for Bianca…while everyone over paid their respects to her body. Her life.
This is the first time I’ve sat down on a birthday to pen a poem for a death day.
There’s a first for everything.
This night. These people. Flowers came from afar. I was surrounded by so much love, and the love feels that much more infinite and rich in contrast with the gaping landscapes that are blurry and ragged around the edges. The missing.
In death we live.
In loss we find our alive.
In dark we light.
I feel more will to mother knowing that Bianca, right now, cannot.
I have never been more grateful for my friends, my loved ones, my lover, my bath soaps, my bedside pens and pencils, my ability to write a poem, my son and his laughter, the blood coursing through my warm hands. My friends. My friends. My friends.
Hold your loved ones close tonight.
My god, it’s all so fucking brief.
To all few hundred of you who joined the Patreon togay, welcome to the family. It’s a good one.
Good night. I’ll never feel a day like this again on earth.

♥️🥀
There is literally nothing better that leftover birthday cake for breakfast with coffee
I am becoming my own songs, and basking in it.
We’ve been gardening before school this week. The kale is going in before we have to brush teeth and get to the bus stop by 8:10.
So much of the last five years has been destruction, boots on fragile seedlings over and over again, dis-assembly, scorched earth. Now, finally, maybe something can flourish from the ash.
We are all so slowly recovering. Putting our hands in the ground helps with the metaphor every day. My body shakes less. My mind can settle. My little seed here is starting to smooth out his anxieties, make sense of the pain. We slowly get away from the darkness that bites at our heels, we wake up to date after day of very simple delight. This garden, I know, is a luxury. I think about the burning ground in so many places on earth right now. The wreckage. This oasis.
What else to do? So slowly, one handful of dirt at a time, we plant, we feebly attempt to heal our own little broken worlds.
The things that happen in our lives, my friends, may be horrific. Unimaginably dark. But then, things settle; there is compost.
So please, as @cosmogyny so beautifully puts it:
make something grow.
Happy spring to you all. I love you.
(Also, to the hundreds of people who became my patrons on my birthday, I’m blown away and so grateful. Thank you for helping me grow. I’ll write to you all soon over there.)
