Here I am in my last year of high school 42 years ago making the first of what turned out to be many more films. My friend @j_rupert_thompson and I and others made a spoof on SuperMan called SUPER DUDE. That’s right! And we had a blast putting it together and showing it to the entire school. Hopefully, I’ll get a clip from him and post it one day. But Boy – I had no idea how fortunate my decision to go into the acting profession would be for me on so many levels. A year before this I was devastated because I was a badly injured young athlete who thought his way out of the hood was gone. I think this experience really helped me move forward and find what I was meant to do. Starting out nice and easy with resistance training for my upper body while avoiding stress/pressure on my left wrist. The doctor tells me I shouldn’t lift for almost a year but it’s coming up on 6 months since my surgery and there is no way I can wait for another 6 months to get going. But my wrist is still weak and I don’t want to do any damage to it so I’ll just work around it. I haven’t gone to the gym to work my lower body, out of fear that I’d get comfortable and try to do other body parts I shouldn’t do so I stayed away. But now I’m getting it back together “resistance” wise cause you can’t build muscle without some sort of resistance. However, I’m not a bodybuilder and I’m not young anymore 🤷🏾♂️🤣 so for me it’s about functional strength for a healthy body as I continue to age. Three things I’m gonna work on doing … 1. Light to moderate band and weight training (In and out of gym) 2. HIIT cardio (box jumps, air squats, light ball slams, jumping jacks etc … also walking/hiking) 3. Stay away from sugar (for now that’s all I’m gonna require of myself diet wise but this will really help) … It’s a mind game folks and you have to figure out what is gonna work for you. If you choose to do something but can’t stick to it then it’s no good to you. And it’s not weak or a cop out if you don’t do things 100% or all out. It doesn’t have to be an all or nothing plan. Who cares how pretty it looks … This is an example of the simple stuff I did to get myself in shape time and time again. It doesn’t take a lot of crazy acrobatic movement (which I have absolutely nothing against). But anybody can find ways to get that heart pumping, burn fat and feel better! I just make shit up or modify what I see someone else do or do exactly what I see them do. I did this 6 times for 45 seconds each time with 60 second breaks in between and eventually I will increase the time and sets and decrease the rest time but I am just starting out so I’m taking it easy. Others not so much 🤣 If I remember correctly we had to do some small reshoots and publicity in LA and that might have been my first trip to LA. It was also the first indication that the studio was excited about and going to push the film. Morgan Freeman wasn’t a star yet so the main thing we had going for us was the director of ROCKY and THE KARATA KID, John Advilson. Of course, even though LEAN ON ME was Morgan’s first starring role, I do recall that he had gotten a best Supporting Oscar nomination for a film called STREET SMART where he played a smooth but dangerous pimp named Fast Black. He also smoked a scene in the film BRUBAKER where he played a tough ass lifer in prison. This was all from the man on ELECTRIC COMPANY😁 Remember when I flipped that desk on him? For the first month of the pandemic I watched TV and sat around waiting for it to be over. But I can’t sit around doing nothing for too long so I decided to make better use of my time. And when I tell you it doesn’t take spectacular moves to get in shape I mean it. Ball Slams, Box Jumps and other types of HIIT CARDIO along with intensity, consistency, decent eating habits and some resistance training will do it!
