The PIP assessment is already gruelling and it often isn’t awarded to those who need it. Now, new eligibility rules will shut off vital support from up to 1.2 million disabled people. I’m urging the government to drop this policy. #PoliticsLive
I spoke to the @bbctodayprogramme this morning about why cuts to disabilty benefits are a political choice – and the wrong one.
Any one of us might need disability benefits at any point in our lives. We all deserve a well-funded welfare system that enables us to live full and independent lives, no matter what unexpected challenges we may face.
Nottingham has a proud history of solidarity. We look after each other and we don’t fall for con artists playing divide and rule. So, in our hundreds, we showed Kelly Jay Keen’s small anti-trans march that their views are not welcome on our streets. They’re lying about standing up for women: all they’re advancing is patriarchal gender roles and the growth of the far right. Their movement is a danger to trans people and all women. Thank you to @nottinghamagainsttransphobia and to every single person who came, drowning out their hatred with our solidarity.

I remain gravely concerned by today’s welfare announcement, to put it mildly. Cutting social security for disabled people will only deepen poverty and inequality. This wasn’t in our manifesto and it isn’t what people voted for when they elected a Labour government.
Right-wing MPs keep claiming people are seeking asylum in the UK “illegally”, but what’s the truth?
Israel has broken the ceasefire, killing 400 Palestinians in Gaza and injuring over 500. The death toll and humanitarian catastrophe is worsening by the hour. The UK must finally demand accountability for Israel’s war crimes, strengthen sanctions and ban all arms sales.
Israel, now backed by Trump, has broken the ceasefire with total impunity. We have a choice in the UK: uphold the principles of international law or keep fuelling a politics of tyranny. #PoliticsLive.
What’s the point in refusing citizenship to refugees who have ‘made a dangerous journey’? What’s the point in publishing footage of people being deported? I’m sorry to say that this is simply a continuation of the performative cruelty we saw from the Conservatives. The new Home Office guidance means that some refugees will never be allowed to feel secure and safe in their homes. These people are already here. We’ve agreed they are refugees. Why refuse them citizenship simply because they took the only route that was available to them? In an increasingly volatile world, taking a leaf from the far-right playbook will never end well – for any of us. Our party and the British public – 75% of whom believe Britain should offer refuge to those fleeing war and persecution – are better than this.

I set out my objections to briefed welfare cuts in a letter to the government last week. Many colleagues have done the same. None of us became Labour MPs to make the poor poorer. I sincerely hope tomorrow’s Green Paper reflects that.

Mental illness is on the rise in the UK as a direct consequence of austerity, entrenched inequality, crumbling public services, and now a cost of living crisis. Cutting benefits would make people’s health worse, when what they need is to be taken seriously and supported. I spoke to @lewis_goodall1 on @lbc yesterday:
I recently joined Nottingham College’s ‘Meet the Leaders’ panel with @cllrlux and Gary Godden to hear about the issues students care about and answer questions about our roles. We discussed the urgent need for more investment in our city, and for decision-makers to meaningfully engage with young people and hand them power.

It was a privilege to meet Cecilia Mwenda and the team from HEAL Collective for the launch of their new display at the National Justice Museum, Ghosts of Yarl’s Wood. The exhibition shows why we need an immigration system that doesn’t punish people simply for seeking safety.
It was great to be out with @cllrneghat, @cllrdavidmellen and Cllr Gul Khan, knocking on doors in Bakersfield, listening to constituents’ concerns and picking up casework.
After years of cruelty by Tory governments, we must reform our broken asylum system. It is a lack of alternative means to claim asylum that is driving people to make dangerous crossings in the Channel. Safe and legal routes are what we need to save lives.
From sick pay to the weekend – trade unions built the rights we rely on today. This #HeartUnions Week, I’m proud to back Labour’s New Deal for Working People, which will deliver the biggest boost to workers’ rights in a generation. If you haven’t already, join a union today!
