On October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorists dragged @eli_sharabi7 barefoot from his home in Kibbutz Be’eri and took him into Gaza. He spent 491 days in captivity — isolated, starved, and beaten — holding on to the hope of one day seeing his family again. Only after his release did he learn the unbearable truth: his wife, Lianne, and their daughters, Noiya and Yahel, were murdered in the attacks. “Hostage” is Eli’s painful and powerful story of survival. His memoir describes both the suffering of each day as well as the strength he found to keep going. I am so moved by his courage and resilience. By bravely sharing his experience with the world, Eli is helping make sure the truth of October 7 is not forgotten and the memory of its victims is honored. My prayers continue to be with the hostages still in captivity and the families still waiting.
@ColumbiaIGP launched a new report this week: Accelerating Efforts to End Child Marriage. It looks at the real cost of child marriage and outlines evidence-based solutions to help end it for good. We’re holding it here with HE @firstladyfatimabio, who’s been an incredible champion in the fight against child marriage in Sierra Leone. As we write in the foreword, every child marriage derails a life of possibilities. A girl forced into marriage doesn’t only lose her childhood. She loses years of education, economic opportunity, and autonomy. She will spend her life navigating consequences she never chose. The world loses her potential, too. We rarely talk about child marriage in economic terms, but we should. A new analysis in the report, from @cgdev_, finds that child marriage costs the global economy approximately $175 billion per year from lost productivity and increased health risks. Every girl deserves the same opportunity to play, learn, and grow up safe and healthy. And the world deserves the contributions she can make. It is not just possible to end child marriage. It is absolutely necessary. Our moral leadership and a better global future demand it. Read the report at the link in @ColumbiaIGP’s bio.

Pyramids, sailing down the Nile, ancient ruins and generous and kind people. Days with @tom_bernthal are often magic, but a few days in Egypt last week were filled with Tom and I saying to each other “I can’t believe this is what we’re doing today.”
Child marriage remains one of the most urgent, preventable violations of the rights of women and girls. On top of the human cost, a new report from the @ColumbiaIGP Women’s Initiative, with analysis from @cgdev_, estimates the cost of inaction at $175 billion per year. Read the report at the link in @ColumbiaIGP’s bio.

Three incredible days with our parents at the Wolf Lodge in Norway. Yes, we actually hung out with wolves and fed arctic foxes. I didn’t even know this could be on my bucket list.
After 24 months in captivity, the remaining hostages taken by Hamas are finally home. They have endured two years of unimaginable hardship, and their strength is nothing short of extraordinary. For their families, this day brings indescribable relief. They have spoken out, demanded action, and been steadfast in their solidarity and support for their loved ones. As they hold one another close again, I hope they find the healing they so deeply deserve. As we celebrate these reunions, I’m remembering those who were taken and did not make it home. The world should never forget their names. My heart is with families who continue to grieve. I’m also holding in my thoughts the families in Gaza who I hope can begin to rebuild after so much loss. May this moment mark the beginning of lasting peace.
Marrying a child at 12 or 13 is not just “child marriage.” As @firstladyfatimabio said, it’s “legalized rape.” When a girl is forced into marriage, she loses control over her life. She is forced into sex she is too young to consent to and into pregnancy before her body is ready. She is often pulled out of school. Too often, the cycle continues, with her daughters more likely to be forced into child marriage themselves. Every girl deserves to choose her own future. Join us in protecting that choice. Read and share our new report, Accelerating Efforts to End Child Marriage, from the @columbiaIGP Women’s Initiative in partnership with @leaninorg. Link in bio.
Bucket list trip with @tom_bernthal and my parents to Iceland. Hiking and whale watching by day. The northern lights by night. Magestic and magnificent.
Every year, 12 million girls are married before they turn 18. Let’s be clear what that means – her childhood ends. She is forced into a life of limited education and opportunity, where someone else makes daily decisions about what she does, including sexual activity. Kakenya Ntaiya was engaged to be married at age five. But she refused to accept it. She fought for her education, escaped early marriage, and went on to found @kakenyasdream so girls in her community can grow up safe and supported and finish their education. Kakenya’s story is powerful but far too rare. There are 640 million women alive today who were married as children. Today the @columbiaIGP Women’s Initiative is releasing a new report, Accelerating Efforts to End Child Marriage, developed in partnership with @leaninorg. The report includes a new analysis by @cgdev_ which examines the true cost of child marriage – $175 billion in lost economic potential each year. When girls grow up safe, educated, and free to choose their own lives, the world is stronger for it. Join us to be their voice. Read the report at the link in bio.
Too often, women are interrupted or talked over in meetings. It happens from the classroom to the boardroom. In this clip, I talk about something simple we can all do: when you see it happening, speak up. Say, “I’d like to hear what she’s saying.” You don’t have to be the most senior person in the room to do this — anyone can. And when you do, you show respect not just for the woman speaking, but for the value of every voice at the table. Have you seen this done well, or done it yourself? I’d love to hear your stories.
The peace agreement and ceasefire are a critical step toward easing the suffering so many have endured. For the families of the hostages who have been waiting and praying, it means their loved ones are finally coming home — an end to unimaginable anguish. For the families in Gaza, it means aid and relief — and the ability to finally begin rebuilding their lives. This war was initiated by the unspeakable violence of the October 7 attack and caused immeasurable loss. Nothing can undo the pain of the last two years. And my deepest hope is that this moment leads to lasting peace for the people of Israel and Gaza.
It’s International Day of the Girl — and these 9 stark truths remind us how much more we need to do to support girls everywhere. Millions of girls are still forced into child marriages, denied an education, or subjected to violence. Many are told to quiet their voices or start to doubt themselves at an early age. By their teenage years, far too many believe speaking up will make them unlikable or that leadership isn’t for them. But this doesn’t have to be their future. #IDOTG is a call to action — to build a world where every girl is safe, every girl learns, and every girl leads. When girls are free to reach their full potential, it lifts us all.
Informal networks — the connections that form outside of formal work settings, like during happy hours or team outings — can shape careers. But too often, women get left out. In this video, I share why it’s important to join in when you can, create your own activities, and speak up so teams plan events everyone can enjoy. What kinds of strategies have worked for you?
Nothing like being in a room with ambitious women! My time with @leaninorg Circle leaders at @nasdaq was the perfect way to celebrate International Women’s Day. The women of Nasdaq are using their Circles to build executive presence, negotiate for what they want, and create “connective tissue” across teams. All their stories had one thing in common: their Lean In Circle is a safe place to step into leadership together. Thank you to CEO @adenatfriedman, CFO Sarah Youngwood, and EVP and CPO Bryan Smith and to Lean In’s own @emmamacanroberts for championing Lean In Circles and making this all possible.
“What’s your advice for having the ‘household chores’ conversation with a partner, and making sure the split is fair?” Women still do more of the work at home. The key is being clear about the kind of partnership you want, checking in on how the split really looks, and staying aligned with love. What’s worked for you? Share your advice in the comments.
Women are still asked more often to do “office housework” — like taking notes or planning the party. In this video, I share simple ways to make sure these tasks get shared more fairly. I’d love to read in the comments how you’ve handled this at work.
We launched @leaninorg Girls to help girls see themselves as leaders in a world that too often tells them they’re not. I loved joining Megan Murphy from @girlsschools and @archanagilravi, Head of Lean In Girls, for a powerful conversation about our program and how we can help girls find their purpose and power. Just days after International Day of the Girl, we’re reminded how important it is to remove the obstacles in girls’ way and encourage them to lead on their own terms. The world needs their contributions now more than ever.
