Tonight, our family lit our menorah to mark the first night of Hanukkah — joining Jews worldwide in this 2,000-year tradition. The story of Hanukkah is one of hope. It’s about the triumph of light over darkness. And it reminds us of the persistence of faith — a community surviving centuries of persecution without losing our shared identity. As we said the blessings tonight, I felt a deep connection to Jews across the globe who have persevered for centuries to continue celebrating our faith. Around the world, billions of others are also celebrating Christmas today and the values it represents: kindness, empathy, and peace and good will to all. It’s fitting that Christmas and Hanukkah fall on the same day this year. It’s a reminder of our common humanity, showing that we all seek hope, love, and compassion. May all of us, from every background and faith, find light in our lives and work together for enduring peace. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah.

On October 7, Hamas terrorists showed us exactly who they are. Their atrocities — killing, kidnapping, and sexually violating innocent civilians — struck at the heart of the Jewish community. They sought to break one of life’s strongest bonds by destroying entire families in front of each other. Today, the Civil Commission on October 7th Crimes by Hamas Against Women and Children and the Raoul Wallenberg Center (@therwchr) released a new report on Hamas’ widespread and systematic attacks against families — including murder, abduction, forced separation of families, and burning of their homes, often with families still seeking shelter inside. As the report explains, this kind of weaponization of familial bonds isn’t defined and criminalized in international law, but it should be. This report honors the suffering of the families who were torn apart by Hamas. And it’s also a call to action for the international community to stand up to protect families across the globe by classifying “kinocide” as a crime against humanity. In the Rio Grande Valley, hope and resilience are ever-present. Over the last few days, my family and I met true heroes. Monica Weisberg-Stewart’s family has lived in the Valley for decades and she and her daughter Jackie (@bisl_sove) are truly dedicated to ensuring that every member of their community has the opportunity not just to survive, but to thrive. Judge Richard Cortez (@judgecortez) told us, “if you find joy in serving and you are always serving, you will always be happy.” A decade ago, Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley (@ccrgv_restoringhumandignity) opened what they thought would be a temporary center to give people in need a place to rest. With the support of volunteers and donations, the community united to build the permanent Humanitarian Respite Center. It provides a safe place for countless men, women, children, and infants to have a warm meal, shower, and change into clean clothing — as well as receive medicine and other supplies. Since 2014, the Center has assisted over 500,000 people – and you can see @sisternormapimentel’s faith and compassion in all they do. The incredible people we met in the Rio Grande Valley are the very best of our country. Thank you for your service and for inspiring all of us.
