I am deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend and colleague, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson. A remarkable trailblazer, unmatched advocate for equity in S.T.E.M., and true champion for the American people, Eddie Bernice represented the people of Texas with distinction and grace for three decades. She embodied what it means to be a servant leader, and will be forever missed. My sincere condolences to the family and all who loved her.
HUD is making the dream of homeownership a reality for more Americans.
Today, I spoke to the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services about HUD’s work to boost housing supply, expand access to affordable housing, root out discrimination in housing, and promote homeownership opportunities.
Today, I celebrate the historic presidency of @potus, whose transformational leadership has resulted in critical investments that foster strong communities. Our commitment to expanding access to safe, affordable housing is essential to ensuring all have the chance to thrive.
In the midst of a tough housing market, the need has never been greater for our assistance. But we are working to meet the challenge. Here are some significant steps we’ve taken thus far to serve those who need our help most. ⬇️ 1️⃣ HUD has housed people through 120,000 new incremental vouchers in a three-year period, a 20-year record. 2️⃣ The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) has cut costs for homeowners and brought first-time homebuyers into the fold, achieving the first-time homebuyer rate at the highest it has been in over two decades. This year alone, FHA served more than 625,000 first time homebuyers. By percentage and volume, FHA served 3x as many Black borrowers and 2x as many Hispanic borrowers as our counterparts. 3️⃣ HUD has addressed the legacies of racial discrimination in housing. 4️⃣ New investments will build for the future, ensuring communities are resilient to the effects of the climate crisis, particularly for Black, Indigenous, and low-income residents of color, which are often hit the hardest. 5️⃣ Ginnie Mae supported a record high of over $2.5 trillion in current government lending, by providing liquidity in the housing finance system and facilitating the flow of more investment capital into US housing markets.
As we kick off the new year at @hudgov, we are doubling down on our commitment to create strong, reliable, and affordable homes for the people of this nation.
Under the leadership of @potus, HUD is investing in addressing homelessness in historic ways in order to get more people off the streets and into safe, stable homes.
My condolences go out to Joe Madison’s family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who enjoyed hearing his voice in the morning. He will be missed.
Volunteers nationwide have started the annual survey of the number of people experiencing homelessness on a single night in January. HUD’s Point-in-Time (PIT) count is so critical because it helps influence our response to this crisis as best as we can. With the PIT count helping to guide us, HUD has dedicated a tremendous amount of our funding and resources to help get people off the streets and into homes. Swipe to see what HUD has done to address homelessness since the last count in January 2023.

Today in Savannah, GA, I announced a historic $3.1 billion to address homelessness in communities nationwide—including $4 million for Savannah. We, at HUD, remain firmly dedicated to supporting our local partners in providing permanent homes & services to those who need them most.
I had the pleasure of visiting I Promise Apartments this week—an affordable housing community in which the @ljfamfoundation and @eandc330 leveraged HUD funding to build. Affordable housing like this builds up communities. This is what it looks like to invest in America.
I have made it a priority of mine to embed racial equity into HUD’s governing framework—and we’re making meaningful strides. Take a look at just a few of the ways we are delivering for Black people in this nation under my leadership. ⤵️ 1️⃣ HUD has removed some systemic barriers to homeownership and supported approximately a quarter of a million Black homeowners buy a home with FHA mortgages in the last 3 years. 2️⃣ HUD helped over 160,000 Black homeowners avoid foreclosure and stay in their homes since the beginning of the pandemic. 3️⃣ HUD has expanded access to housing counseling to help Black families and individuals unlock the wealth building potential of homeownership. 4️⃣ HUD has invested more than $10 million in Historically Black Colleges and Universities. 5️⃣ HUD has expanded rental assistance and increased the number of Housing Choice Vouchers to people with low incomes. 6️⃣ HUD is providing second chances in HUD-assisted housing for people who have been impacted by prior justice system involvement. 7️⃣ From rooting out appraisal bias to addressing disparities in housing needs, HUD remains dedicated to combating racial discrimination in housing.
This #BlackHistoryMonth, we celebrate all that Black Americans have contributed to our great nation. As Secretary of HUD, I am committed to helping ensure Black and Brown children, of the future, can live in a country that lives up to the ideals of liberty and justice for all.
It was great to be back in Akron today—a city I know very well. From my fellow Ohioans to families nationwide, the Biden-Harris Administration is building an America where everyone has a chance to thrive, especially those who have historically been left out or left behind.
It was an honor to join @repcleaver in Kansas City, MO to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As HUD Secretary, Dr. King’s commitment to rooting out injustice guides me, and has reignited my dedication to carrying out our agency’s mission with care.
My message to the American people as we look forward to 2024: Do not lose hope. We at HUD are doing everything we can to ensure the people of this country have quality, affordable places to call home.
With @secfudge at the helm, HUD has taken meaningful action to connect the people of this country to quality affordable homes, and foster communities that are inclusive and strong. Our team remains dedicated to carrying out our mission with people in mind in the years to come.
