Dr. Jane Goodall leads global appeal to end dolphin captivity 🐬 Dr. Goodall, in conjunction with the Jane Goodall Institute’s Cetacean Committee, has penned an open letter to the Flemish parliament and its Animal Welfare Commission asking it to ban the keeping, breeding and importation of dolphins at a park near Bruges. Watch to learn more 🎥
🐾 Jane often talks about her beloved childhood companion, a dog named Rusty. While many think Rusty ignited Jane’s passion for animals, Jane says that in fact, she was born loving animals. Rusty’s friendship and intelligence played a different role in Jane’s journey.
🐶💡 Rusty’s companionship empowered her to challenge the skepticism she faced while earning her PhD. “It was Rusty’s friendship and intelligence that helped me to stand up to the Cambridge professors who told me that only humans had personality, minds, and emotions!”
Rusty’s companionship and the lessons he taught Jane allowed her to build upon her innate love for animals.

“If you’ve heard this story before, well that’s too bad,” Dr. Jane Goodall said with a twinkle in her eye to a packed auditorium at Seattle’s Moore Theater.
Dr. Goodall went on to explain that in indigenous American tribes, stories are often told over and over again, becoming a source of comfort and familiar knowledge. She expressed her appreciation for this tradition and joked that if anyone in the audience didn’t like it, “too bad,” as she would be sharing her familiar stories tonight and throughout her tour — she’s currently traveling the world in celebration of her 90th birthday.
As Jane tells us, stories create a sense of community and connection to each other. This humorous anecdote from Jane was a powerful reminder that stories have the ability to transcend time and culture, bringing people together and providing comfort and inspiration.

With the Olympic games now in full swing 🙊, we wondered… how would chimpanzees fare in gymnastics? 🤔 🤸 Here we see the future Olympians of Tchimpounga training for their gymnastic trials. Of all the Olympic events, we believe this is where chimpanzees would shine the brightest. ✨ Even at just a few months old, an infant chimpanzee has a grip strong enough to fully support its own weight. As they grow and become more independent, these agile acrobats hone their strength and stamina by jumping between trees to avoid predators, traversing precarious landscape in search of food, and even hanging upside down with a single foot for reasons we humans can’t explain! Whether it’s the uneven bars, pommel horse, or still rings, when witnessing this young group of chimpanzees display their acrobatic skills, there’s no doubt—they would take home the gold! 🏅 Stay tuned and witness how one of Mother Nature’s top athletes would perform in other events at the Olympic Games. 🐵✨🏅 #Chimpanzees #JGI #JaneGoodall #Olympics *Dr. Goodall and the Jane Goodall Institute do not endorse handling or close proximity to wildlife. This represents a sanctuary context with trained professionals. 🎥: Fernando Turmo . . . . Alt Text: Video of adolescent chimpanzees, at Tchimpounga, swinging from tree branches in a forest setting.
Do you notice anything unique about this chimpanzee, Skosha?
Those captivating eyes! In this footage, Skosha exhibits pronounced sclera, a rarity among wild chimpanzees.
While the significance of this trait remains a subject of curiosity and exploration, some researchers speculate that it could play an important role in non-verbal communication. 👀
This footage was captured in 1999 at JGI’s Gombe Stream Research Center (@gombestream), where Skosha lived until her passing on December 8, 2003. Research continues to this day at Gombe — the longest-running wild chimpanzee study in the world! 🐵

A video of a female chimpanzee, staring into the camera with large, white eyes.
🤩🌳 Meet Marina, one of the incredible park rangers of Tchimpounga Nature Reserve! 🌿🧭 Tchimpounga Nature Reserve’s park rangers are employed by the Republic of the Congo government and trained by JGI to patrol the reserve for illegal activity and to monitor the park’s biodiversity. Marina was recruited in 2023 by the conservator of Tchimpounga Nature Reserve, who had seen her skill working in Conkouati-Douli National Park and sought her out. With Marina’s expertise in using GPS and other tools, her team relies on her for navigation through challenging terrain. ♀💪 As the first female park ranger at Tchimpounga, Marina enjoys surprising villagers with her role! When they ask about a woman in her position, she explains that women are just as capable. Her strong work ethic has impressed her colleagues, who quickly acknowledge her toughness. She shared that she has yet to encounter anyone who challenges her authority because of her gender. 🫶 We love that Marina may inspire other young women to become park rangers, just like Jane inspired many scientists to follow in her footsteps! 📸 credit: JGI Republic of the Congo . . . . . #WorldRangerDay #ParkRanger #NationalParks #NatureReserve #Tchimpounga #TchimpoungaNatureReserve #WomenInConservation #InspiringWomen #JaneGoodall #JaneGoodallInstitute #Chimpanzees #Conservation #Nonprofit #ChimpanzeeConservation #Interconnected #CommunityLedConservation #CommunityConservation #Wildlife #AfricanWildlife #Tacare

🌍🐢 Happy World Turtle (and Tortoise) Day from the Jane Goodall Institute! 🐢🌍
🌿 Turtles have roamed the Earth for hundreds of millions of years — there’s a lot we can learn from this resilient group of reptiles!
💚 While they’ve weathered multiple mass extinctions, these amazing creatures do currently face numerous challenges, from habitat loss to climate change. By protecting their habitats, supporting conservation efforts, and spreading the word about the importance of biodiversity, we can ensure a brighter future for turtles, tortoises, and all wildlife.
Swipe to see some of the turtle friends we’ve had the privilege to care for and release back into the wild through our wildlife rehabilitation work at Tchimpounga Sanctuary.

Here’s what we do at JGI! Join us in inspiring hope and transforming it into action 💚
The Jane Goodall Institute is a community-led conservation organization founded in 1977 that advances the vision and work of Dr. Jane Goodall. Today, we are a global network with local chapters around the world! Each of our impactful programs is rooted in Jane’s story and her signature approach to conservation. Here’s a look at what we’re focused on:
🔍 Continued research into wild animal behavior — especially chimpanzees — at our research and rehabilitation facilities.
🌿 Community-led conservation, using our Tacare approach to work with communities to find solutions to the drivers of conservation issues
🫶 Best-in-class wildlife rehabilitation at our Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center in the Republic of Congo
🌱 Youth empowerment through our youth action program, @rootsandshoots, which teaches through service learning projects.
