Bonnie and I had the extreme pleasure of cheering Jodie Foster yesterday at her big moment of putting her hand and footprints into the famous gallery of cement at Hollywood’s Grauman’s Chinese Theater. Jodie’s cinema career defies credulity. By age 14, she had starred in Taxi Driver, Alice Doesn’t Live Here Any More, and three other sterling films. She has won and also been nominated for multiple Oscars, from The Accused, Silence of the Lambs, to our very own NYAD. Her dear friend Jamie Lee Curtis told colorful Jodie personal stories, such as her dressing in costumes for holidays and going door to door in her neighborhood, inciting others to also get into costume and widen the group. Yesterday was a big professional moment for our friend Jodie Foster. And it was also a big personal day—-her 10th anniversary shared with her wonderful wife Alexandra Hedison.

Millions, from Mexico to Vermont, thrilled to witness the eclipse yesterday. Why are our emotions stirred at an eclipse? Seems to me it serves as a reminder of both our gratitude for this perfect, life nourishing position where our earth finds itself….as well as our utter awe of the unfathomable phenomena of our spectacular universe. We live daily under the misconception that our trio of beautiful orbs—earth, moon, sun—-are fixed. We count on them to be just where we expect them. During the eclipse, we are breathless to watch the perfect circle of the moon elegantly travel across the face of our life-affirming sun. Am just now re-reading Carl Sagan’s mesmerizing COSMOS (my, don’t we all miss our space philosopher/poet Sagan?). Two shout-out’s for women’s sports today…. and one shout-down for a male athlete. Caitlin Clark continues to take not the sports world, but the whole world, by storm. On the heels of her multi-million-dollar deal with Nike, Clark has now also matched only the icon Michael Jordan with a Wilson deal for her own signature basketball line. We’re watching you, Caitlin, in awe! HUGE kudos to Amy Appelhans Gubser, age 55, for swimming the frigid (43 degrees) and dangerous (home of great while sharks) crossing from San Francisco to the Farallon Islands, the first to ever achieve the swim in that direction. Bravo, Amy! Disgust for Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker over his misogynist and hateful remarks at last week’s commencement address at Benedictine College. Many have weighed in with disdain for his stating that women should pursue the roles of homemakers and mothers, above all other pursuits. Yes, this idiot has the right to free speech. But what alarmed me most was the young women graduates rising in applause for his remarks. He claims a man may have a respected profession, with a woman right by his side for support, yet a woman shouldn’t be swayed by career, but rather devote herself to her man and get busy producing children. Butker piled on with anti-gay intolerance as well. Is it Butker or BUTTker?
I hope many of you enjoyed celebrations and memories of your mothers yesterday. I sat with one of my Babar books, now 70 years old, and my mom’s impeccable French came back to my ears. Mom read to me Babar every night and I was enraptured with that elephant. At the end of Lucy’s life, In Alzheimer’s grip, I would sit on Lucy’s bedside and read Babar to her, the circle completed. I just did a series of photos and videos for the Alzheimer’s Association, hoping to fund more research and care opportunities. I bet many of you out there know only too well the heartbreaking effects of Alzheimer’s.

Jude Frere is a second-grader in Hickory, North Carolina. She and her mom Melissa contacted me through Bonnie a couple of months ago. I sent her a short video, encouraging her to believe she can be anything she wants to be. Well, in the meantime, Jude had a school assignment this week whereby the kids in her class were to dress and make a short presentation as someone they admire. To my delight, Jude chose me! When they found out I’d be in Asheville, NC for our EverWalk event, they arranged with Bonnie to drive the two hours to meet me, even though I was busy with our walkers and only had a few minutes. Jude did her presentation for me, Bonnie and a few EverWalkers and here she is presenting it at her school the next day! Well done, Jude!!!! Can you imagine what an honor it is to have a child admire you? I come across people in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s who tell me they did their school essay or project about me way back in 5th grade…and they remember. As I say, I couldn’t be more honored. #nyad #rolemodel
