Christians observe Good Friday today, a solemn time of reflection and prayer to remember the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. This year, Good Friday and Easter take place amid a troubled and conflicted world, with many people living under grievous and inhumane conditions. We must not lose hope in face of suffering and tragedy. Let us draw strength from the message of this season and work together for a more peaceful world, while cherishing the precious societal harmony that we enjoy in Singapore. Congratulations to the @singaporepoliceforce Security Command (SecCom) on the official opening of your new HQ! SecCom officers have worked with me for many years. They ensure the safety of key office holders, such as the President and Cabinet Ministers, as well as visiting foreign dignitaries. From time to time, we read about physical attacks on other world leaders. Singapore is a safe country, but we should never take our safety and security for granted. The new facilities will enhance our officers’ training, equipping them with the skills to respond to any incidents swiftly and effectively. Glad to catch up with Indian External Affairs Minister @drs.jaishankar yesterday during his visit to Singapore. India and Singapore are longstanding partners. We exchanged views on recent global and regional developments. Our bilateral cooperation is also in good shape. For example, the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR) is spurring collaboration in forward-looking areas such as digitalisation and skills development. Happy to see residents and families having fun at the Kebun Baru Family Day yesterday! This year, the family day featured a fascinating mix of modern and traditional activities – such as drones and robotics to sashiko sewing and crochet art. I was heartened to see the young trying their hand at crochet and the older residents testing their drone handling skills. Just shows that you can learn something new and have fun doing so, whatever age you are! Happy to welcome Communist Party of China International Department Minister Liu Jianchao to the Istana this afternoon. Since PRC President Xi Jinping and I upgraded bilateral ties to an “All-Round High-Quality Future-Oriented Partnership” in April 2023, Singapore-China relations have continued to strengthen and broaden. Minister Liu and I affirmed our substantial progress in bilateral relations. He also updated me on China’s foreign and domestic priorities. Joined the Ang Mo Kio Constituency Merchants Association (AMKCMA) 44th anniversary celebrations at @gardensbythebay last night! The AMKCMA plays an important role in the community — promoting merchants and their businesses, helping business owners upgrade and upskill, revitalising the AMK Town Centre area and helping the community. They have made the town centre a more vibrant and upbeat place, both for people to shop, and as a common space to meet friends and family. Congratulations to AMKCMA on turning 44! Glad to meet Sri Lanka Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Sabry today. Minister Sabry is in Singapore for his first official visit. Minister Sabry updated me on the progress of Sri Lanka’s economy. We had a good discussion on ways to enhance our bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade and investment, climate change, food security and capacity building. We also exchanged views on regional developments. Singapore and Sri Lanka commemorate the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year. I am confident that we will find many more opportunities to strengthen people-to-people exchanges to benefit both countries. Happy to welcome US @toddyoungin to the Istana yesterday. 🇸🇬🇺🇸 Singapore and the US share a deep and robust partnership, made possible by Congress’ continued support. Senator Young and I spoke about the US-Singapore Free Trade Agreement which entered into force twenty years ago. This has anchored our mutually beneficial partnership, generating jobs and investments for both countries. Our longstanding defence and security ties are another pillar of our relationship, and we are now working together in new areas such as critical and emerging technologies. We also discussed global and regional developments. The US has contributed tremendously to peace and prosperity in our part of the world, and Singapore continues to support its engagement in our region. Senator Young wears many hats. In addition to serving on several Senate Committees, I learnt that he is actively promoting soccer in the US, as a member of the Congressional Soccer Caucus. Grassroots leaders, volunteers, various corporate and community partners, as well as PA staff, have long played an important role, engaging residents and strengthening the community through numerous programmes and initiatives. Glad to meet a group of them at an appreciation reception after the @peoplesassociation Board Meeting today. The PA’s mission is as relevant today as ever – to build bridges among different groups and communities, in order to achieve “One People, One Singapore”. PA played a crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic, a reminder of the importance of social cohesion and trust between the government and its people. Pleased to meet Lao PM Sonexay Siphandone and his delegation in Singapore today. We have met several times before at @asean Summits. This year, Singapore and Laos commemorate 50 years of diplomatic relations. PM Sonexay and I welcomed our growing ties, and emerging areas of cooperation such as carbon credits. We also discussed renewable energy trading under the Lao PDR–Thailand–Malaysia–Singapore Power Integration Project. With its tremendous hydropower potential, Laos is well-placed to become the “Battery of ASEAN”. Laos is also the 2024 ASEAN Chair. We underscored the importance of making progress on the ASEAN Power Grid, and advancing the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific. Happy to launch the biography of former Chief Justice, Dr Yong Pung How. As Chief Justice, Dr Yong transformed our judicial system. He modernised court processes and championed the use of technology. Dr Yong also believed strongly in nurturing people. The Justices’ Law Clerks (JLC) programme, which he introduced, has continued to build a strong pool of talent in the legal profession. Dr Yong’s illustrious career spanned many key institutions. He was the first Managing Director of Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC), and later became Managing Director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). Dr Yong had a reputation of being a stern judge, but outside the courtroom he was a personable and warm mentor who earned the respect of the people who he had worked with.
