“Our emotions serve as essential guides in life.” – Kate Silverton. For children to engage fully with the world—rather than withdraw or feel they must do battle with it—they must trust that all their emotions are accepted and valid. Core emotions like anger, sadness, surprise, and joy are fundamental to the human experience. They enable us to experience life’s inevitable highs and lows without being overwhelmed. Teaching emotional regulation takes time and patience, but it’s one of the most valuable tools we can offer our children. In fostering emotional literacy, we give them a gift for life. Teens or toddlers? How do you help your teens when they lose their temper with you and how do you manage your response to stress in those heated moments? In this week’s Parent Pod video episode with @thetimes child psychotherapist and best-selling author Kate Silverton joins me to delve inside the developing teenage brain. She explains what’s happening when your pre-teen and teen’s behaviour seems to regress to toddler-like tantrums and how you can regulate your emotions in those moments. And I learnt about ‘attuning’ – how the art of sharting nervous systems with our children can help everyone regain their calm and repair the rifts which are to be expected and indeed help you strengthen your relationship. In a super useful interview Kate gives us phrases we can use with our adolescents around challenging behaviour and a toolkit on setting boundaries, helping teens who have become withdrawn and the art of active listening. The Parent Pod with @thetimes is a weekly series helping parents to navigate the complex journey of raising teenagers: we have tackled talking about sex, acne & teen skincare, nutrition and stressful teen friendships. To watch go to The Times Life & Style YouTube channel or to the links in my stories and the round highlight above. or google me, The Times and Parent Pod. #parentingteens
Anxiety is NORMAL But the feelings and sensations that can arise alongside can feel worrying and even debilitating The more we are able to support our children with their anxiety, the more we help them to develop resilience and learn how to regulate themselves when anxiety rears its head In this series of reels, I will show you some of the ways to do that I will also do a live on Wednesday at 19.30 here on IG to answer questions and explain the tips and tools in more detail. #anxiety #anxious #childrensmentalhealthweek #childtherapy #parentingbook #parenting #helpyourchild
When a child is anxious, telling them ‘there’s nothing to worry about’ won’t make their fears disappear. What they need is connection not correction. By meeting their anxiety with empathy—‘I see this feels really big for you right now’—we help our children to feel safe, understood, and supported. Children can’t calm themselves – their brains are still too immature to be able to fully regulate big emotions like anxiety. So they need some of our ‘wise owl’ calm. When we model emotional regulation, our children will learn to do the same. Empathy isn’t just kindness—it’s the foundation for resilience. 💫💫 #AnxietySupport #EmpathyFirst #HelpingChildrenThrive #childrensmentalhealthweek #parenting

A live on anxiety and how to support your child … I cover a lot of ground … what is anxiety, how might it manifest and how we can help our children build resilience and come through Resources can be found here My books ‘there’s no such thing as naughty’ for parents with children 0-5 and ‘There’s still no such thing as naughty’ for parents with children 5 and beyond Dr Margot Sunderland’s children’s story books are brilliant I’ll organise more lives and q&as in due course – thanks for watching and let me know how you get on – good luck and go well It can help to think of anxiety as a voice that simply needs to be heard & soothed .. If you are struggling and / or your child is finding their anxiety too difficult to cope with day to day always please seek professional help from your GP / school or trained mental health professional – you and your child should not have to feel you must go through this alone – never be afraid to ask for help ❤️💪🏼 And you can find much support from these organisations too @traumainformedschoolsuk @_place2be @afnccf @earlychildhood #parenting #childrensmentalhealthweek #anxiety #anxietyrelief #anxietysupport #anxietyawareness
Anxiety in children is not a sign of weakness—it’s a sign they’re feeling deeply. Our role isn’t to eliminate their worries but to help them build the tools to navigate them. By offering reassurance, modelling calm responses, and creating a safe space for their emotions, we empower them to develop resilience and confidence. Small steps, big growth. 🌱✨ #knowyourselfgrowyourself #childrensmentalhealthweek #ChildhoodAnxiety #BuildingResilience #ParentingSupport”
The breath is a powerful tool for regulating the nervous system. Sighing and moaning activate the parasympathetic response, releasing tension and signalling safety to the body. Encouraging our children to vocalise their breath helps them process anxiety, shift out of fight-or-flight, and return to a state of calm connection. #toptip #parenting #anxietyrelease #parentingtips #katesilverton
Better sleep = better parenting – scroll for a simple tip to make it happen! Your sleep is vital, because you can’t pour from an empty cup When we don’t serve ourselves with sufficient sleep .. it’s impossible to be the calm, compassionate, patient parent we want to be… Try this one simple tip to ensure you get an earlier night, and your kids get their fun mum / dad back ❤️ Prioritise your sleep—it’s the secret to more patience. #getmoresleep #sleepriorty #sleep #rest #children #bedtimestories #readathon #katesilerton..
Anxiety is stored in the nervous system, not just the mind. Movement and rhythm help children to regulate their body’s stress response, while our empathy provides the safety needed for true release. When we move in tune with our emotions and feel seen by others, the nervous system shifts from survival to balance. #childrensmentalhealthweek #anxiety #parentingtips #katesilverton #supportfromyou
